11 miles from hell

Ok, that title is a little deceptive because the 11 miles itself weren’t terrible.  It was what came after the 11 miles.  Let me start at the beginning.

Yesterday was our last long run of our training plan.  Although the plan calls for a 12 mile run, we decided a few weeks ago we didn’t want to do that, so we changed it from running 9, 10, 11, and 12 to running 9, 8, 10, and 11 the last few weeks.

So this was it.  11 miles and next stop, half marathon.

The run started out great.  We were giving each other thumbs up the whole time and we even high fived each other when we made it to our friends’ newly purchased house 5.5 miles out.  We were chatting a bit and generally loving life.  After we made it to their house, we turned around and started the 5.5 miles back, which were still going really well.

Until we got to the 8 mile mark.  I hit a wall, hardcore.  Luckily, I had read a few chapters of What I Talk About When I Talk About Running yesterday morning, so I still had some inspiration in my head from that.

Thank goodness for this book

One thing I kept repeating to myself was something he says in the book — “I’ve come too far to walk.”  I did not run 8 miles just to walk the last three.  Not happening.  So I pressed on.

Around this time, James (seriously, he must be my soulmate) could tell I needed encouragement; he said he couldn’t see it on my face, but that he knew.  So he kept saying “good job” to me as we ran.  This helped me push through for another mile or so.

Then when we hit 9.76, I was done.  I was gassed out and wasn’t sure if I could walk home if I stopped, let alone continue running.  So I told James I didn’t think I could make it.  And he said “I know  you can.”  Well, obviously, with that kind of support, I had to try!

So, I pushed through.  I repeated another one of Haruki Murakami’s mantras from the book — just focus on the next 3 yards in front of you.  Don’t look all the way down to the end of the street where you have to end up, but just look at the next 3 yards.  This definitely DEFINITELY helped me.  Instead of thinking about how much more I had to go, I focused on the little victories of covering 3 yards at a time.

Finally, it was over.  We finished the entire thing in 1:58.  Not great, but considering I wanted to give up three miles before, definitely an accomplishment.

But then it went from bad to worse.  As soon as I stopped running, I realized how light-headed and hungry I was.  Stupidly, I didn’t eat nearly enough or drink enough water before we went out for the run.

I thought I was going to pass out when we got back to the apartment, so I immediately chugged some water and ate a yogurt.  I still felt terrible, so I ate a can of mandarin oranges and a bagel thin with peanut butter.  Well, that was all a terrible idea, because then I got sick, which meant I had no food or calories in my body.  This led to even more light-headedness, nausea, and chills.  Needless to say, I felt like I had the flu.

Finally, after talking to my parents, I figured out the appropriate thing to do.  I sipped water and some green tea, and James went to the grocery store for some gatorade.  It took me almost two hours to drink 20 ounces of gatorade because I was afraid to push it.

(Gatorade from today because I was in no condition to take a picture yesterday)

This guy also kept me company on the couch all evening.

Don't be sick, Mom!

I also had a few sweet potato fries and half of a veggie sandwich a few hours later, but that was it.  Needless to say, I didn’t wake up feeling so great today, so all day I’ve been trying to eat as much as possible to get my body back to normal.

I started with “chai oatmeal” which I made with vanilla almond milk, a teaspoon each of cinnamon and ground ginger, half a teaspoon of ground cloves, and a tablespoon of honey.

Chai Oatmeal

It doesn’t look pretty, but it was really soothing for my stomach.  Then I got a whole wheat bagel with honey walnnut cream cheese and started a bottle of gatorade, which I finally finished around 3 p.m.

For lunch I got all this goodness:

Half a grilled asparagus and tomato sandwich, amazing potato soup, fruit (with very little melon — perfect), and a cookie.  But unfortuneately, yesterday killed my stomach, so I can’t eat that much, so I couldn’t finish the soup, sandwich, or fruit.  I didn’t even touch my cookie for 2 hours (that’s when you know there is trouble).

Then I had some more oatmeal once I got home (with vanilla almond milk, peanut butter, and honey — no pic, one oatmeal pic per post is enough).

I’m starting to almost feel normal now, but I’m not completely there.  However, I’m glad this happened this week instead of two weeks from now at the race.

James and I came up with our plan of how to prevent this during the half.  First, I have to eat something substantial before the race.  I don’t know what it is yet, but I will be eating.  Second, we have to have a Gu mid-race.  James offered one to me yesterday while we were running, but at the time I didn’t need it.  I wasn’t thinking of what it would do for me in the long run, so I’m definitely not turning that down during the race.

This guy will be making an appearance at the half

(old picture)

We are also drinking water at every water station and having a second Gu as soon as we finish.  We are also equipping my mom and dad with a bottle of water and a bottle of gatorade for each of us for when we finish.

So, I promised you some advice, and unfortunately I had to learn this the hard way.  If the same thing happens to you:

1. Drink fluids!  Juice, pop, or gatorade are all good to get some electrolytes in you without your body having to work to get the fluid out of foods.  The liquid plus calories will help hydrate you and replenish you.

2. Drink water in between sips of the other fluids.  You need the other fluids for electrolytes, but you need water!

3. Do not chug!  Sip!  Small sips of water and other fluids will be easier on your stomach.

4. Don’t stuff yourself right away.  Don’t be like me and eat everything in sight to try to cure your light-headedness.  You will just make yourself sick.  The key (after getting your liquids) is to eat in small bites to not shock your stomach.

5.  Relax.  Lay down, sit down, or do whatever is necessary to bring your heart rate down.  You don’t want your heart rate to be working in overdrive while you are also trying to get food and liquids into your system.  Calm down!  Even if you think you will, you won’t die.

I feel ridiculous for my body reacting that way, but if you don’t prepare it for that kind of exertion, what else do you expect?  I also promised myself that I would blog about the good, the bad, and the ugly of training, so I definitely couldn’t hide this one from you guys.

How bout some good then?  Yesterday’s run taught me how to be mentally strong and overcome my desire to give up.  Although yesterday’s ending wasn’t what I would have wanted, it doesn’t make me think I can’t do this.  Especially with James’s encouragement (and my parents holding our snacks)!

I’ll keep  you updated.  In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy some How I Met Your Mother, Dancing with the Stars, and the rest of my book.

Have a wonderful night!

The Calm Before the Storm

Unfortunately, my blogging plan went out the window last night because I was incapacitated from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. when I was finally able to go to bed.  I will get to all of that in a longer post tonight — my first half marathon post where I will be including tips and advice based on my experience.

Hope I don’t leave you hanging too much :)

Now, to recap yesterday afternoon, which I like to refer to as the calm before the storm because it was a great Sunday.

My friend Steph sent me a Target gift card to get some bridal magazines.  No one ever believes me when I say this, but I’ve never looked at a bridal magazine before.  I bought some for my sister and for Steph, but I never looked at any myself.  So needless to say, I was pretty excited.

I immediately went to Target and got these little beauties:

I also grabbed some Starbucks because honestly, I can’t go to Target and NOT get a drink.

Iced nonfat caramel macchiato...yum!

I spent the afternoon reading through these for some ideas about colors, dresses, and honeymoons <– which was my favorite part.

Because we don’t want to plan too much in the next month, I marked pages to refer back to without giving them a whole bunch of thought, so I’m excited for when the real planning begins and I have all these to look at.

While reading, I made myself an egg and cheese sandwich on a bagel thin, but the best part were the 4 fresh basil leaves I added to it.  I definitely recommend this for a little more flavor.

Like my cute plate?  It was one of my gifts during senior week in undergrad from my “lil sis” in my sorority.  I love it!

So that was my yesterday afternoon.  Be sure to check back tonight for some advice on how to handle it when you think you are going to die after a run (hint: get yourself a James :) )

Have a wonderful day!

Gnocchi Recipe

I realize I put up pictures of Milwaukee only when the weather is terrible, so here’s a glimpse of pretty Milwaukee that we see almost everyday:

Sunny day

Anyway, now the fun stuff!

Ready to carbo load?

James and I decided to try out gnocchi to switch up our carb intake while training, and we love it!  It is so quick and easy, and every time we’ve had it, our run on the following day has been great.

Try out this recipe for a simple way to get some gnocchi, veggies, and cheese (most important, obv)!

Broccoli and Tomato Sauce Gnocchi

1 package of gnocchi

1 onion

1 shallot

1 c. chopped broccoli

1 jar of your choice of sauce

1 t crushed red pepper flakes

1 t garlic powder

4 large leaves of fresh basil, chopped

1/4 c of Parmesan cheese

Salt & Pepper to taste (note: I never use salt and use wayyy too much pepper, so you can decide how much you want to use)

Mozzarella cheese for topping

Directions:

Cook gnocchi according to the package (it takes only 2-3 minutes in boiling water).  In a skillet, sauté the onion, shallot, and broccoli.

Once the veggies are sautéed, turn the heat to medium low and add a jar of pasta sauce to the veggies and stir to combine.

For the spices, I tore up 4 large basil leaves and added black pepper and stirred it in.  I also used this red pepper garlic sample I won from the Wild Tree party yesterday.

I used about 2 tsp of this, so you can use 1 tsp each of crushed red pepper and garlic powder.  Add the parmesan cheese and stir to combine everything.

Drain the gnocchi and return to the pan.  Cover the gnocchi with the sauce and top with mozzarella cheese.

Enjoy!

Venue Shopping

So I hinted at it earlier, but I had a fun get together with my law school friends today!

My friends Danielle and Meghan were sweet enough to host a Wild Tree party — think pampered chef, but with natural products.

Not only was it great to see my friends and drink mimosas, it was also a blast learning about the products and, of course, ordering a few goodies for my kitchen.  The products will be shipped here in a few weeks, so I can fill you in on what I got.

Check out this spread:

Delicious spread

Wild Tree is mainly oils and spices, but dipping the pieces of bread into the different oils/sauces was my favorite part.

So good!

On my way home, I decided to surprise James with some fro yo since neither of us really got a chance to enjoy ours Tuesday since he proposed before we finished (hey, don’t worry, I am NOT complaining).

I got the exact same combo as Tuesday, and because they didn’t have pistachio for James, I got him a mix of peanut butter and chocolate with brownie bites, peanut butter cups, and chocolate sprinkles.

We love our fro yo!

I also had my last beer from our Sam Adams variety pack.

Some wedding planning occurred today, as well, which was really fun.  Although we are holding off on most of the planning until after my sister’s wedding, we want to pick a venue soon to make sure we get the one we want.

So, we went through pictures and pricing for 6 venues, narrowed it down to 3, and then really picked our top two.

I’m hoping we can get a tour next weekend of our top choice and make our decision because then we’ll have our venue AND the date!   I’ll keep you updated!

So, overall, it was a pretty productive Saturday.  Tonight, I’m making some gnocchi (not from scratch) and enjoying some couch time.

Then tomorrow is 11 miles….

See you all then!

Chocolate Milk Makes Everything Better

Does that title make you think I’m a third grader?

It should.  But it’s so true — chocolate milk seriously makes everything better.

We always have a gallon in the apartment because we love chocolate milk with the new Peanut Butter Cheerios.  It makes a nice little dessert.

This morning I decided to take the next step and make my oatmeal with chocolate milk.  Why I hadn’t thought of that before, I have no idea!

Chocolate-y goodness

It doesn’t look pretty, but it was goooood!  Especially with the spoonful of peanut butter I added to it.  Perfect start to my morning.

This little guy has also made it a perfect start–he’s been laying with me all morning.

All day is Naptime!

Not a perfect start?  This rain!

Gross morning

Good thing we decided to take our rest day from running today.

Rain doesn't bother me!

I have a fun get together with some law school friends this afternoon and looked forward to walking to my friend’s apartment.  However, this rain is not helping.

Now I’m off to ice my legs via an ice bath.  It will be my first one, and I’m not very excited, but my legs are super sore so I think it’s necessary.

Have a wonderful Saturday!

Friday Run

Happy Friday night my friends!!  TGIF for sure, am I right?  This has been an amazing week, but it doesn’t mean I wasn’t ready for the weekend :)

This little guy is super excited his mom and dad are home for the weekend.

Don’t let him fool you, he’s resting up for extra snuggling tomorrow.

Since we last saw each other, we ran 10 miles!  Not all at one time.  Last night we ran 4 in our apartment’s gym.  When we walked in, there was a guy on the elliptical and he asked if I would prefer the elliptical instead of running (the gym has two treadmills and one elliptical–I know, smallest gym ever).  James and I were laughing about it because when he asked me, he was looking at my legs, which were covered with compression socks and these knee braces:

I’m sure he thought I was the dumbest person alive for running when I clearly have problems.  Oh well!  The run was great!  It was the second fastest I have ever run 4 miles and my knees hurt only a “twinge.”  I’m not sure if that’s the right way to describe it, but that’s what I got.

After the run, we chatted with James’s mom a bit while stretching, then I read a little What I Talk About… before bed.

****

I’m going to skip ahead to tonight’s run, because my day wasn’t super exciting (other than an amazing lunch at a new Armenian place Staci suggested.  She’s good!)

After work, James and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to run 5 or 6 miles, so we figured we would decide on the way.  At about 2.5 miles out, I gave James a thumbs up and he gave me one back, which made me figure we should do 6 miles.  Bad choice.  Today’s run was hard!

Cement legs, stiff joints, and my foot fell completely asleep.  Seriously!  It was a hard one and our time was pretty terrible for us, but hey, we ran 6 miles on a Friday night.  That’s a win in my book.

These two things greeted me after our run:

More icing

Beer!

Again, Milo was again kind enough to make sure  the ice was safe.  He’s so considerate!

Now we are doing laundry, catching up on all kinds of tv, and eating some thai food.

The perfect Friday night with my dog and fiance :)

Beautiful blooming flowers

Good night everyone!

Great Food, Great Company

So I made a rookie blogger mistake tonight — I forgot my camera!  So no pics of the amazing food, but I did take some from online so you can get an idea of this amazing place.

James’s mom was in town tonight for dinner, so we wanted to take her somewhere new.  My friend Staci recommended Bel  Air Cantina and because Staci is pretty much a genius, we took her advice.

Good thing we did!  The food was amazing!  And Thursday was taco Thursday, so we had $2 tacos, $2 beers, and plenty of chips and salsa.  Check out how cool this place looks:

We absolutely loved it and we will definitely be back!

While we were there, we had a great time filling her in on the engagement and potential wedding plans, as well as catching up with her.  It’s always so great to see our families, and we are so blessed that we get along with each other’s families so well.

Afterwards, we drove her to our new apartment where we are moving in July.  Seeing the new place always makes me excited for moving to the new place so soon!

Now we are enjoying the NFL Draft, and James and I are heading to the gym for our 4 miles as soon as we finish digesting.

So, this morning after I posted, I checked out the training plan on our fridge.  Yesterday was supposed to be 5 miles, not 6!  So I stopped only a half a mile early–not bad!  I’m glad I didn’t know that though because I would have forced myself to run that last half mile, which I definitely didn’t need to do.

I’m going to get all decked out in my knee guards and compression socks for tonight’s run, and hopefully it will be great.

Even if it’s not, oh well.  I had great food, great beer, and great company tonight so all in all, it was a great night!

Knee Problems

So last night was kind of depressing on the running front, but I’ll get there in a minute.

First of all, thanks to everyone for all the well wishes Tuesday and yesterday.  It means the world to me that so many people congratulated us and that so many people (who I never would have thought would) read my blog.  I’m looking at you, Abe :)  So thank you everyone for the kind words.

Yesterday was a great day at work.  It was super busy, so it flew by, and I treated myself to these little numbers:

Egg white, sun dried tomato, & cheddar sandwich and chicken soup

And of course a cookie

I ate half the sandwich before I took the picture because I was starving.  Also, I was trying the sea salt and cracked pepper bagel for the first time and couldn’t wait to taste it.  It was amazing!

Once James and I got home, I decided to make one of my super easy go-to recipes — Caprese Pasta.  This recipe is super simple and contains some of my favorite ingredients.  Make sure you check out the recipe below.

During dinner, we caught up on the New Girl, I caught up on Parks and Rec, then I read a little more of the Book Thief.  I didn’t finish in time to participate in Julie’s book club, but some other events prevented me from reading on Tuesday night.  I’m definitely ok with that!

Now that I missed the deadline, I’m switching back to What I Talk ABout When I Talk About Running.  I’m almost done with it, and after last night’s run, I definitely need the motivation and inspiration.

****

Our training plan called for 6 miles last night.  We went down to our apartment’s gym, each hoped on a treadmill, and started our runs.  To be perfectly honest, I should have stopped at 0.83 miles.  At that point, I started having terrible knee pain along the top of my knee cap.  Because I missed running on Tuesday, I was determined to not miss another day of running.  The result was limp-running for 4.5 miles until I finally had to give up.  My breathing was great, my legs felt great, but my knee failed me.

I tried slowing my pace, but the slower I went, the more my knee hurt, so I ran the 4.5 miles decently quickly, but I was pretty bummed that I couldn’t finish.

At this point in our training, I know the point is just to stick with running regardless of the distance.  However, it’s hard to get that through your head two and a half weeks before the half.  Instead, all I kept thinking was “If I don’t run 6 miles today, I can’t run the half marathon.”  That is not true, and it is a terrible way to think.  Running is all mental, and I can’t psyche myself out at this point.

I know that I will be fine if I rest my knee.  I mean, c’mon, I ran 10 miles easily on Sunday.  I actually noticed that I have knee pain only on the treadmill, so I think I may need to start training entirely outside for these last two weeks.

I also have to do more of this:

Icing my knees is a definite must to help them recover, and I have to take care of them.

Neither James nor I decided to do the half marathon as a last hurrah from running — we have both been running 3-5 miles 5-ish days a week since the beginning of college.  Our plan was never to just run for these three months then call it quits.  We were just training to train.  Because of that, we have to pay attention to our bodies because neither one of us wants to give up running after the half, which is a possibility if we push too hurt.

Hopefully icing, running a good pace outside, and taking appropriate rest days will help us through the next couple weeks.  Luckily, like I said, running is all mental, so tonight is a new night!

I think I just need some new songs.  I’ve learned that any run is a great run if you have a good playlist :)

Oh a much brighter note, James’s mom is in town tonight, so we are grabbing a quick dinner with her!  That will be a fun way to [almost] end the week.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day and enjoys the recipe!

Caprese Pasta (serves two)

1/2 box of whole wheat pasta (your choice)

1 pint of cherry tomatos

1 can of diced tomatoes (with basil and oregano)

1/2 c of mozzarella pearls

1/4 c shredded mozzarella

1/8 c of fresh basil

1/4 c of balsamic vinegar (more or less depending on your preference)

Directions:

Make pasta according to the box.  In a skillet, heat the cherry and diced tomatoes over medium heat until they are heated all the way through.

Drain the pasta and mix with the tomato mixture.  Add both mozzarella cheeses, fresh basil, and balsamic vinegar to the pasta and tomatoes.  Enjoy!

Final Engaged Thoughts

Don’t worry, I will go back to posting normally tonight or tomorrow (to recap tonight’s 6 mile run and possibly have a recipe).

But in the meantime….one last engagement post!  Then I’m done, I swear ;)

Highlights from last night that I didn’t mention:

Milo jumping around James and I out of excitment, even if he didn’t know why

Finding out my sister drove up from Chicago to help pick out the ring AND had lunch with James at the Cheesecake Factory — adorable

James’s brother and sister separately telling me they have always thought of me as a sister but now it’s “official”

Telling Milo he will no longer be an illegitimate puppy — and having multiple people text us the same thing

Every single thing about last night

Mom and Dad are getting Married!

Tuesday Night Dinner = Engaged!

So the run tonight did NOT happen.  It’s kind of hard to run 4 miles when you are filled with seafood, frozen yogurt, and CHAMPAGNE!

I cannot believe we are engaged.  I cannot believe my sister and James bought the ring over a month ago when I was in Indianapolis for a wedding (thanks, Susan, you’re the best!).  I cannot believe James called my dad to ask his permission on Sunday when I was driving home from Indiana.

I can’t believe it!

So a few weeks ago, James mentioned that he wanted to go to Mitchell’s Fish Market for dinner.  I thought nothing of this because we random decide to go to dinner, so I thought this was one of those nights.  Apparently James had the ring at work all day today AND in his suit jacket pocket the whole night — including when we tried to take a pic together.

When he got home from work, he had these flowers for me.

Milo was kind enough to make sure they weren't poisoned

Because we hadn’t gone on a “date” in a long long time, I thought he was just being cute and didn’t think anything of them.  I put them in water and we headed out to dinner.

Mitchell’s was amazing:

Bread and New Glarus Cabin Fever Honey Bock to start

Calamari app

Scallops, shrimp, and salmon for me and Surf & Turf for James

I was stuffed when we left, but according to my dad’s theory, there is always room for ice cream.  So I asked if we could stop by Berry Me for some frozen yogurt.  I got a wonderful combo of cake batter and vanilla fro yo with sprinkles, peanut butter cups, and oreos.

James asked if I wanted to take the fro yo home and sit on the balcony with Milo.  Of course I wanted to go home and see Milo.  I grabbed a blanket and we headed out to the balcony.

Gorgeous night

The night was perfect and Milo was sitting outside with us when I said “I think this is my favorite night of 2012.”  You’re welcome, James, for giving you such an amazing transition.  James then said “I think I know what could make the night even better” and put a box on the table in front of me.

I immediately started crying.  He got down on one knee and proposed — I didn’t even say yes right away!  I was crying and hugging him before I realized I hadn’t said yes.

Of course I said yes.  He is my best friend, soul mate, and the father of my dog :)  I can’t live without him and now I never have to!

Yes!

I was so surprised, there was not one ounce of my being that knew this was coming tonight!

We immediately ran inside, popped the champagne my parents gave us (for the half marathon, but I think this called for an early celebration), and called everyone we knew.

My favorite part is that he said he wanted to come home to propose so Milo could be a part of it…do we love that guy or what?

I am so unbelievably blessed to be engaged to such an amazing man!

Just another Tuesday night dinner, huh?  :)
