My First Foodie Pen Pal Adventure

Good morning everyone!  How was your Friday night?  Mine was spent with this:

Breaking Bad

We watched 5 episodes last night, and I’m sure we’ll watch more tonight.  Obviously, we’re living the crazy life :)  But it was fun to just relax and hang out and enjoy a new show.

Milo liked laying around and watching, too

Today, James and I are going golfing with Laura and Alejandro (who you may remember — especially Alejandro — from this post).  Later this evening, we are grabbing dinner with one (two maybe?) of James’s high school friends, so it should be a good Saturday.

****

But now, let’s focus on what this post is really about — Foodie Pen Pals!

Thanks to Lindsay at Lean Green Bean for hosting (see below for details on how to join).

I received my amazing package from Marisa at The College Cuisiner, and let’s just say, she really upped the ante for all future foodie pen pals.  Marisa is from Pennsylvania, so almost everything she sent was either homemade or a PA product, and I loved loved LOVED all of it!

When I got the package from my apartment’s office, I knew IMMEDIATELY that Marisa was my new favorite person.  Do you see the name on this package:

Milo! (I had to take a very close picture to not get the address in the pic

It was addressed to me AND Milo.  And obviously, as all of you know, I’m a little obsessed with my dog, so I was so happy she thought of him.

I wish someone was here to take a picture of me opening this box.  I got Milo all pumped up when I walked in the door by telling him there were treats for him in the box.  So while I stood at the dining room table to open the box, Milo stood beside me, with his front paws on the table, and waited patiently.  It was adorable.

When I opened the box, the first thing I saw was this:

Foodie Pen Pal Adventures!

You are supposed to include something written in the box, but this went above and beyond.  Look how creative and great Marisa is.

Drawing of PA and some of the items in the package

Recipes!

There were also so many amazing goodies in the box:

All my goodies!

Marisa sent me:

- Strawberry shortcake cookies with local strawberries from PA

- Pumpkin bread/muffin mix that Marisa recommended I use for waffles — umm, yes please!

- Quince jam, homemade by Marisa’s sister (<– this was a new to me product and I’m obsessed)

- Apple butter made with local PA apples

- A bag of baked goods for Milo from a PA bakery

- Homemade pita chips (and Marisa included the recipe — thankfully, because these lasted about an hour :) Love them!)

- Honey from a local from an orchard in PA

I immediately broke into the pita chips and quince jam, and had 3 of the strawberry cookies.  I can’t wait to try this recipe!

I’ve been having a little of everything else throughout the month.

Breakfast treats each morning

Pita chips with quince jam

Such a good combo!

Honey for my oatmeal (and James enjoyed it on toast). LOVE the bear :)

One of Milo's dog biscuits....

...which he gobbled right up! (Milo thanks you Marisa)

I also have been eating the apple butter on toast and snacking on the cookies, but I keep forgetting to take pictures.

I also can NOT wait to try this mix.

Pumpkin waffles are calling me!

Pumpkin is one of my favorite flavors, so this is going to be awesome!

Everything Marisa sent to me was so amazing.  It absolutely made my entire month to receive this box.  Marisa — you are the best!  I know I already emailed you to tell you that, but seriously!  You are :)  (Milo and James think so too!)  Everyone, go read her blog, she is awesome!

****

I sent things to a non-blogger, so I thought I would highlight some of the things I sent her:

Caramel popcorn, wasabi peas, PB filled pretzels, and baked cheese puffs

Two of my fave flavors of tea

Here’s what Nancy had to say about the stuff I sent her:

“What a great assortment of items. My husband immediately eyed the caramel corn, which I shared with him, but I told him to keep his paws off the cheese puffs, stuffed pretzels, wasabi peas and the teas. I’m looking forward to have iced flavored tea today. The pomergranate is calling out to me.”

Glad you liked everything!

I Regret Nothing

TGIF!

It’s the end of the week, and I’m so excited to relax a bit.  I do plan on seeing a movie, and we are getting dinner with one of James’s high school friends, but for the most part, its relaxation and watching Breaking Bad.

This morning, I had every intention of getting up to do some yoga before work this morning.  So when the alarm went off at 6 a.m. I turned it off and….went back to bed.  I finally rolled out of bed at 6:52 a.m., and I regret nothing!  It was so nice to sleep in.  I had two rest days this week, which I normally don’t do, but it was so worth it.

Once I finally woke up, I was hungry, but didn’t want to make a full breakfast because my firm has Breakfast Club every Friday where someone brings in breakfast for everyone.  So I decided to have something quick and delicious.

So I had ice cream.

Ice cream for breakfast!

Again, I regret nothing.  These Skinny Cow mint ice cream sandwiches are so good.  It was definitely a Friday morning :)

Well, that’s it for now because it’s time for wine and Breaking Bad!

Old picture, I haven't poured my glass yet

Check back tomorrow for my post on all my amazing goodies from my Foodie Pen Pal!

Good night, everyone!

Dinner at the Yacht Club

Hello everyone!

Another short post because I have to work a little tonight before bed AND the NBA draft is on, so short and sweet it is.

First, LOVED my workout this morning.  I did this circuit 4 times through, but instead of high knees, I did standing mountain climbers, and instead of shoulder presses, I did tricep dips.  I was a sweaty mess after and I loved it.  I followed that up with a 10 minute Turbo Jam abs video and called it a day!

The other highlight of the day was this evening.  Two of the named partners of my firm retired, so tonight was the retirement party at the Milwaukee Yacht Club.  Dinner was amazing, the speeches about the retirees were great, and I loved hanging out with my co-workers (who, honestly, are more like friends).

I didn’t get any pictures at the dinner, but we did go down to the dock to see the boat of one of the attorneys, so while I was on the dock, I took these pics of the amazing Milwaukee skyline and marina.

Beautiful Milwaukee

So pretty!

Lived here my first year of law school

Marina

I'm getting married here! (The art museum, not the marina)

It was a fun night, and events like this always make me appreciate the people I work with!

Well, that’s it.  Short and sweet :)

Have a wonderful Friday everyone!!

Running Outside and a Little Golf

I’m going to keep this one a little short because James and I just got back from golfing and haven’t eaten dinner yet (brats are currently on the grill!  Welcome to Wisconsin!).

I was able to get in my early morning outside run today.  Paige mentioned running outside yesterday because it has been a little cooler out, and I knew I had to get in an outside run before the weather goes crazy.

The original plan was to run 5 miles, but when I woke up 2 minutes before my alarm went off, I decided to forego one mile in favor of an extra 10 minutes of snooze time.  I do not regret it.

Morning run complete

So it was only 4 miles, and a slow 4 miles at that, but I definitely enjoyed it.  Running outside will always be very favorite form of working out.

See Milo creepin in the bottom of that picture?  He’s sort of gross and loves to lick us when we get back from working out.  Much like this:

Crazy dog

I also tried out this new honey with my oatmeal (and peanut butter) this morning.  I love that the jar is a bear — call me a child, but seriously, how adorable?

PA honey

Because it was so warm after work, and because we are both busy tomorrow, we decided to get in a little golf this evening.  No pics of us golfing, but here’s my golf bag.

I love the green

We played 9 holes on a par three, so it went really quickly, but it was fun to spend some time with James, and we both did pretty well (him better than me, obv).

Golf is one of my favorite ways to work out as well (after running of course), even though I’ve been told that golf and working out don’t mix.  I love that I can get in some physical activity and get sun at the same time.  Seriously — the best of my two favorite things: working out and sunshine :)

Final note, AMC is replaying all four seasons of “Breaking Bad” before the season premiere, so I get to catch up on the show I’ve heard so much about!  The first three episodes will be on in the middle of the night tonight, so the DVR is set.

Well, time to enjoy some dinner with my boys.  This guy will only be begging, not eating.

Any for me?

Hope everyone has a great night — two days til the weekend!!

Tuesday Highlights

Happy Tuesday, everyone!  I am having a wonderful Tuesday because James is home before midnight, so we get to hang out, watch some tv, and enjoy a beer.

Happy Tuesday!

He’s been putting in a lot of hours lately (hence why he couldn’t go to Dallas), but now he’s home!

The rest of my day was pretty good too.

I started off with a sweaty workout — I ran for 20 minutes (2.2 miles) and followed that up with 30 seconds of each of these exercises, followed by a minute rest, and then repeated the moves:

- High knees

- Bicep curls

- Burpees

- Tricep extensions

- Jumping lunges

- Upright row

- Jumping Jacks

- Push ups

- Jump Squats

- Shoulder press

It was definitely a great workout that woke me up despite how tired I still am from Dallas.

****

Following the workout, I finished my last butter from Trader Joe’s — oats in a cookie butter jar.  So good!

Delicious way to start the morning

For lunch today, I worked on my of my June goals by getting a salad loaded with fruit.  I was pretty excited to get fruit for lunch since I typically think of it only for breakfast or snacks.

Kiwi, raspberries, and mandarin oranges

This salad is from Waterfront Deli, one of my absolute favorite places to get a quick lunch in the city.  They have a great selection of salads, sandwiches, sides, AND they own the taco cart where I got those awesome tacos last Thursday (and yesterday :) ).

Apparently, all the good parts of my day involves food (let’s be honest, that’s not a surprise), but the next best part of my day where these snacks I enjoyed – Pita chips and Quince Jam, followed by toast with apple butter (which I didn’t get a picture of).

Quince jam and pita chips

Both good snacks to hold me over til James got home for dinner (we are currently waiting for our Thai food to be delivered).

Want a non-food highlight?  Surprise surprise, it’s Milo!

I spent some time playing with him in the apartment including making him jump around for toys and chase tennis balls back and forth.  This is Milo’s “I’m so pooped face.”

Milo is tired! Now it's time for a nap

He also collapsed on the tile by the fireplace for a bit — his standard reaction when he gets tired from playing.  He also spent some time this evening laying on his mom.  Not with — on:

Nap time after work

Nap time after playing

So all in all, it was a great day!  Now it’s time to catch up on The Glades with James and have one of these guys after dinner:

Italian ice!

Lemon flavored (we also have strawberry)

James got these to surprise me when I got back from Dallas, and they are the perfect summer treat!

I’m also hoping head to bed early for a morning run outside.

Have a great night!

Recap of an Amazing Weekend in Dallas

Holy MIA, Batman!  I have been gone from the blogging world for a long time!  The hotel I stayed at didn’t have free Wi-Fi (at least, I don’t think it did), and I was running around with my friends all weekend, so I didn’t really have time.

But now I’m back and ready to recap Dallas!

A bit of a Dallas view from my room

This was such a great weekend for so many reasons — I got a mini vacay, I got to hang out with some of my favorite people, and I got to witness the marriage of one of the greatest couples I know.

Congrats to these two! (I stole this from Brittany)

Let’s start at the beginning.  I arrived in Dallas around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, which gave me plenty of time to get to the hotel, relax, and get ready for Jeff and Brittany’s rehearsal dinner, right?  Wrong!  The van I was taking to the hotel refused to take just me, so he circled the airport for 35 minutes until he picked up more people, then we got stuck in traffic.  I didn’t make it to the hotel until 6:55 (dinner was at 7 p.m.), but luckily my friends hadn’t left yet, so I was able to go with them and we arrived only about 10 minutes after 7 p.m.

With Katie and Nicole on our way to the dinner

The rehearsal dinner was so good!  They rented out Sammie’s BBQ, and I was definitely ready for some Texas barbeque.  I had barbeque chicken, coleslaw, salad, and apple pie.  So delish!

The groom and I

Nicole and I

After dinner, we enjoyed a little square dancing at the restaurant (I just watched), then it was off to a local bar to meet up with friends who weren’t at the dinner.

All smiles (Katie and Adam)

Erica and Sarah -- the first two people I met in law school and still two of my best friends

After about 45 minutes to an hour at the bar, we decided to go back to the hotel because (1) the bar was ridiculously hot and (2) we all wanted to catch up with each other, so we figured we could do that from the hotel.  After spending several hours catching up with everyone, I headed to bed.

Saturday morning, Erica, Nicole, Katie, Ellie, Adam, and I met up at the hotel restaurant for some brunch.  After that, we all headed out to the pool.

The cabana we took over and laying the sun (I took this from Ellie)

Partial view of the pool from my room

There were 15 of us (11 former law students and 4 significant others) staying at the hotel, and we all spent time at the pool together.  Aside from the wedding (which I’ll get to), this was my favorite part of the weekend.  I loved seeing everyone and hanging out by the pool with each other.  It was great.

After some quick frozen yogurt, it was time to get ready and head to the wedding.

The ceremony was at a gorgeous church right downtown.  Of course, I teared up the whole time because I absolutely love Jeff and Brittany.  They are an amazing couple and I was so so happy to be a part of their day.

The Mr. & Mrs.

After the ceremony, we headed straight to the reception, which was at the Belo Mansion across the street from the church.  It too was gorgeous!

After a cocktail hour, which featured some of Jeff and Brittany’s signature drinks made from Zodiac vodka (which is the only vodka I like, by the way), we headed into the ballroom for the reception.

First dance

Adam and Ed

Everything was so perfect.  The food and cake were wonderful, and I had a great time discussing wedding ideas with my friend Sarah and dancing like crazy with everyone.  Nicole took some great candid dance shots, so hopefully I can post some of those soon.

My favorite dance floor moments were definitely “Call Me Maybe” (requested by Nicole), fist-pumping like we were from the Jersey Shore, and a dance-off between Katie and Tony to “Baby Got Back” — an absolute highlight that MUST be repeated at my wedding next year.

After the reception, we all (bride and groom included) headed out to another local bar, Saint Ann.

Packed cab ride to the bar -- Hi Laura!

Katie and I shared a buffalo chicken flatbread, which was amazing, and we all had fun just hanging out together.

Such a cool bar

Erica and I

Sunday morning was bittersweet.  We had one last event — brunch at Frankie’s, a great Mexican restaurant — and it was a blast recapping the night and laughing with some of my best friends.

The bitter part?  We had to leave :(  I shared a cab with Tony and Kayla (who are celebrating their one year anniversary next week! [their wedding was also fabulous]), and headed to the airport.

Unfortunately my flight was delayed, so I got home much later than I anticipated, but it was so incredibly worth it!  I had an amazing time, everything was perfect!

Congrats to Jeff and Brittany for including me in so many aspects of your special day and thanks to all my friends for being you :)  I can’t say enough good things about my time this past weekend!

Now it’s time for some Bachelorette and coming back to reality.  I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!!

Last Post Before Dallas

Ok, I’m going to keep this really short because I just finished packing for Dallas, so I want to hang out with my boys a bit before I leave them for the weekend (James is absolutely swamped at work, so he can’t go with me :( ).

But I am beyond excited to see almost all of my best friends from law school and hang out in a new city.  This will definitely be a blast!

My day was pretty normal today with a few highlights:

1.  I did Lindsay’s treadmill workout this morning, and it’s no joke.  I did the 4.0 rest for only a minute after each one, so it was intense, but I loved it!

2.  Our favorite episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air was on (yes, we watch Home Improvement and Fresh Prince every morning while we have breakfast and get ready for work–switching back and forth with Sportscenter), so the day started off right.

Hey Will!

(Source)

3.  My day also started off right with oats in a jar, Cocoa Almond edition.  So delish.

And half a grapefruit for a well-balanced breakfast

4.  I got lunch from the taco cart outside my work today, and it’s always a highlight.  Corn tortillas are the best, for real.

5.  I painted my nails a fun hot pink (thanks, Susan, for the polish).  This seems like a good Dallas color.

Summer nails -- please ignore how long and creepy my fingers look

That’s all.  Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to post tomorrow night about my travels and Jeff and Brittany’s rehearsal dinner.

Can’t wait!

My One Summer Gripe

Happy first day of Summer!!  (I have a summer gripe, which I’ll get to in a minute).  I’m definitely enjoying this to celebrate the first day of summer:

Milwauke Ale House's Louie's Demise

AND, the work week is almost over!  Even more so for me because I leave for Dallas on Friday for a wedding!

I’m so excited to see some law school friends, explore Dallas, have some Texas BBQ, and most importantly, celebrate one of my favorite couples!

Workout recap time!

This morning, I found workout inspiration from Alyssa in the form of this workout.  Full disclosure, I used 8-pound weights because they were the heaviest I had, but it was still a great workout.  It was definitely challenging and I loved that it was a pure strength circuit.

Because I had some extra time (I woke up before my alarm so my workout started early), so also did a few cardio exercises (butt kicks, high knees, punches, jumping jacks, etc) for a bit until my knees started hurting, 7ish minutes of abs, and 10ish minutes of additional strength exercises.  It was a random, varied workout, but it all worked.

Tomorrow I’m back to running, I think.  I want to do this treadmill workout from Lindsay, so I’ll keep you posted.

****

So, my summer gripe.  Seriously, this is the only thing I don’t like about like about summer.  Otherwise, summer is the greatest thing ever.

This is going to make me seem like a lazy couch potato (who leads a charmed life if this is my complaint), but I’m willing to risk it — I had the television schedule in the summer.

I know, I know, what a lame gripe.  But seriously, one of my favorite things is coming home from work, having dinner with James, and catching up on our shows on the DVR.  However, in the summer, our DVR is pretty much empty.

We have only 4 summer shows!  Actually, we have two shows and I have two that James tolerates when I turn them on.

My shows are the Bachelorette and the Real Housewives of New Jersey <– trashy television at its best.

But that’s it!  Seriously, what is there to do all evening if there are no shows to watch?  Are there any summer shows I’m missing out on?

Side note #1: We do LOVE Burn Notice, but unfortunately, we got behind a few seasons ago, so we can’t watch this season until we catch up.

Side note #2: We watch Dexter, but we don’t get Showtime, so we have to wait for the DVD.  So once that comes out in August, Dexter will be added to our summer show list.

If you have any recommendations, I’m open to suggestions.  (Staci, I’m looking at you — I have convinced James that we need to catch up on Breaking Bad though!).

But I guess if my biggest complaint is the lack of television to make me lazy, things are going pretty well, right? :)

Well, off to read a little (a fortunate consequence of no tv).  Have a wonderful evening!

Some Wedding Decisions and a Book Review

Hello everyone!  Hope you had a good Tuesday!

My day started out not  as planned — I wanted to run 4 miles-ish, but my knees were really bothering me, so I didn’t want to overdo it.  Instead, I ran a quick 2 miles, then came back to the apartment to complete a 20-minute Turbo Jam kickboxing video.  So although I didn’t work out like I wanted to, I still got in a good one.

I need to figure out what I’m going to do tomorrow morning.  I want to take one more day off from running, so I think a circuit is in order.  Looks like I’m hitting up Pinterest tonight :)

****

So we’ve made some slight progress with wedding planning.  Neither of us have really done much planning at all, and I think we aren’t that concerned at this point because the wedding is still over a year away.  Once the one year mark hits, I might feel more pressure, but right now, I’m not worried.

However, we did discuss wedding songs.  I already knew which song I’m using for the Father-Daughter dance (my sister actually used the same one because it’s a family thing).

Father Daughter dance at Susan's wedding -- not sure why she looks so surprised in that pic :)

But we finally decided on our first dance song, as well as the songs for the ceremony.

We will be dancing to Uncle Kracker’s Smile.  We toyed with picking a different song, but for awhile now, we’ve both thought Smile applies to us very well, so we’re sticking with it.

For our processional songs, I’ll be walking down the aisle to Canon in D, and our wedding party will be walking in to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s instrumental version of Groovy Kind of Love.  (Funny story — I’ve wanted to use this for awhile, then I recently rewatched the Friends episode where Chandler and Monica get married and this song is playing — so I HAVE to use it!).

We are about 95% sure about our recessional song, but I’ll wait on that one until it’s official.

Obviously we’re focusing on the really important stuff for the wedding — songs!

I’m know you’ll see more wedding planning coming up in the next few months, so I hope you are excited for that.

Last, but not least, for the evening, a book review!

I had heard such great things about Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, so when I found it at Half Price books for, like, a dollar, I got it immediately.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

“In nineteenth-century China, in a remote Hunan county, a girl named Lily, at the tender age of seven, is paired with a laotong, “old same,” in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she’s painted a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men. As the years pass, Lily and Snow Flower send messages on fans, compose stories on handkerchiefs, reaching out of isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. Together, they endure the agony of foot-binding, and reflect upon their arranged marriages, shared loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their deep friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart.”

(From goodreads.com)

This was such a good book.  I liked it for so many reasons.  First, it was just a well-written novel.  It’s descriptive and beautifully written.  Second, it was about a time period and culture I know nothing about.  It was so interesting to read about the traditions, customs, and lifestyles.  However, even though it is something I am not familiar with, it’s easy to follow along and understand what is going on and why things are done the way they are.  Third, I really liked seeing the characters grow.  We met Lily and Snow Flower when they are so little and see them grow into women with their own families.

I don’t really have any problems with the book — I really liked it — but I kept thinking that something that was happening would be the “misunderstanding,” but that doesn’t end up happening until almost the end of the book.

Some parts of the book are difficult, mainly the way the girls and women are treated, as well as the misunderstanding, but overall, I think this is a great book — it’s an interesting story that gave me a glimpse into a world I have never thought of before.

Even if you can’t find this book for a dollar, you should still read it :)

My Milwaukee Bucket List

Two Milwaukee related posts in a row?

Ok!

Doing the Great Milwaukee Race on Saturday really made me realize how much I love this city.  Molly and I even commenting (as we were running) that we think Milwaukee is such a cool city and it’s great to get to places in the city that we wouldn’t typically go.

Beautiful Milwaukee

(Source)

James and I are actually moving outside the city in a few months, so we can still get downtown whenever we want (and we’ll both still work downtown), but it won’t be the same as living right here.

So there are a few things that I want to do before we move — a Milwaukee Bucket List, if you will.

First, I want to go to Jazz in the Park in Cathedral Square.  Every Thursday, Jazz bands play in the park and you can get wine and food and just listen to music.  Every summer, James and I talk about going.  But this will be our fourth summer together and we still haven’t been!  So we are definitely going to Jazz in the Park this summer.

Jazz in the Park

(Source)

Second, I want to get some food from the food trucks.  There are several food trucks throughout the city, but I have never eaten at any of them.  I’m really hoping to try out Streetza Pizza.  Luckily, Food Truck Fridays moved to Red Arrow Park, which James and I can easily get to for lunch.

(Source)

Third, I want to run the Bastille Days 5k.  I finally went to Bastille Days for the first time last year, and this year I want to “Storm the Bastille.”  This one I know for sure I will do because I signed James and I up yesterday!  Yay for accomplishing at least one thing on the bucket list.

Fourth, I want to walk to two of our favorite places — Cafe on the Plaza for brunch and Buckley’s for dinner.  We love those two places and they are so close!  I want to take advantage of living so close to them before we move.

I think that’s it for now.  I might think of a few more, or I may come up with unofficial bucket list items, but I for sure want to accomplish those four before I move.  Dream big, right?  (Sarcasm because obviously those are all fun things and not something I need to work hard to accomplish).

I think it’s important to explore your city, so I’m looking forward to fully enjoying this amazing downtown before we move.

Well, time for the rose ceremony on the Bachelorette.  Not looking good for Team Laurie….

Night all!
