July Foodie Pen Pal

Morning everyone and day two of another week!

Holy Missy Franklin, huh?  She was pretty awesome last night.  I also enjoying watched the men’s team gymnastics (and there was some controversy!). The women’s team gymnastics is tonight!!  So pumped!

James and I were actually gone all weekend to James’s hometown to visit his family (and he attended a bachelor party), so we got back pretty late Sunday evening, and I still haven’t caught up on sleep, so I’m a little tired.

(Sidenote, I saw Magic Mike this weekend too, which I thought was pretty entertaining.  If you want a review that is aligned with my thoughts on it, here you go.)

Anyway, it’s perfect that I have a pre-determined topic for today’s post, so there is very little thinking involved this morning :)

It’s Foodie Pen Pal reveal day!

Thanks, Lindsay, for hosting.  All the details for Foodie Pen Pal are at the bottom of this post, but first, let’s get to the goods!

Jessika from Nohe’a Ola sent me this amazing book from Seattle, Washington, and I was so excited to open it!

All my goodies

When I opened the book, some of the first items I noticed were the raspberry jam and gourmet cookies, both from Washington.

Jam and Cookies from Washington

I love jam, and this one was (still is, it’s not gone yet) absolutely delicious.  And the cookies!  I immediately ate one before I finished going through the box.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk

Milo clearly thought it was for him.  No joke, James and I finished this entire box in 24 hours.  So so good!

Next, I came across some ingredients for Jessika’s pumpkin oat loaf.

Ingredients for pumpkin oat loaf

The oat loaf looks really really good, but unfortunately, since we have been moving, I haven’t had eggs in the apartment (or really any groceries for that matter) for the past few weeks.  However, we are grocery shopping today, and this loaf is the first thing I am making.  I always have oatmeal for breakfast, so it will be so nice to add some variety to my typical breakfast.  Plenty of pictures to come when I make it.

On a side note though, I was so excited to get Justin’s Peanut Butter.  I have heard so much about this brand, and it does not disappoint.  James loves it, Milo loves it, and the honey flavor — which Jessika sent me — is perfect because I always add peanut butter and honey to my oatmeal.  This takes care of that with one scoop!

Mug of Oatmeal with Justin's Peanut Butter

She also sent me this chocolate peanut butter bar, which was so good!  It has 100% of your daily vegetables, but I couldn’t tell at all. All I could taste was chocolate-y, peanut butter-y goodness.

A delicious protein bar

Finally, one of the reasons I love the Foodie Pen Pal program so much is because everyone is so sweet and takes the time to check out my blog before sending my box.  This is my second month of Foddie Pen Pals, and for the second time, even little Milo got a treat.  It warms my heart that both of my Foodie Pen Pals so far have thought of him, too, because as you know, he’s the love of my life :)

A butterfly treat for Milo

He absolutely loved this cookie treat.  I was going to give him only half, but he was so cute that I let him spoil his dinner with the whole thing.

Milo's tasty treat

Enjoying his treat

Milo and I were both very impressed with this box.   Once again, Foodie Pen Pals has proved to be such a highlight of my month.  I opened this box after a day of stressful moving and it immediately put a smile on my face.

Thank you so much Jessika, we loved everything!!

If you are interested in what I sent Laura this month, make sure you check out her blog this morning!

Thanks again, Jesskia!  Hope everyone has a great day!

Wild Book Review

Hello all!

This month, I am participating in Julie‘s July Book Club.

Wild

The book selected was “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail” by Cheryl Strayed.  Here’s a little synopsis from goodreads.com:

“At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Strayed faces down rattlesnakes and black bears, intense heat and record snowfalls, and both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.”

Overall, I really really liked this book.  As someone who really likes challenges, this book was right up my alley.  Walking 1000 plus miles from California to Washington is clearly a challenge, so I was enthralled with the story of it.

I also loved the people Cheryl met along the way.  For the most part, everyone was so nice and also very interesting.  I was surprised with the diversity of the people she met, from a little boy on the trail to fifty and sixty year olds.  I was almost more interested in some of their stories because the people she ran into were so different.

One thing I didn’t like about the book is that I wasn’t a huge fan of Cheryl herself.  Having never been through the things in life that she had been through, I have no idea what was going on in her head, so I can’t really judge the way she reacted.  But some of the things she said, did, and thought — while extremely honest — did not make me feel much sympathy for her.  Overall, yes, I had a HUGE amount of sympathy for her.  But in general, she wasn’t someone I found myself necessarily cheering for.

At the same time though, that didn’t take away from what I thought of the book.  I loved reading about each campsite and all of the scenery and animals she encountered on her journey.  I also wasn’t not cheering for her (in other words, I wanted her to survive and be successful because I’m not a terrible person), so I liked seeing her move from location to location to reach her goal.

This book was hard to put down because I loved her descriptions of the location and I was intrigued by what she was doing.  Whether she sympathize with Cheryl or not, you cannot deny that she was doing something incredibly difficult.  In fact, this made me what to challenge myself in some extreme way.  Definitely NOT by hiking 1000+ miles alone (for one thing, I think it might have been a little different in 1995), but something that seems impossible to me.   I don’t know what that is yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

This book also really made me want to go hiking, which I think is a testament to Strayed’s writing — she is struggling through her hike, but the way she writes about her experience is so beautiful that you can’t help but want to be a part of it in some way, even if it’s only through a day-long hike.

Memoirs are typically my favorite genre of books to read, but even if you aren’t a memoir fan, I still recommend this book.  It was interesting, intriguing, and will probably make you want to do something challenging.

I Eat Trash

Well, it happened.

I joked about it and it happened.  Never joke.

It all started with this post from Cinnamon about her dog getting in the trash.

So, I tweeted her this picture that I had come across on the internet:

I eat the trash

And then I joked:

My tweet to Cinnamon

Well, when I walked in the door after work yesterday, I expected Milo to come greet me at the door — which he did.  BUT in addition, he had gotten into the trash and it was all over the apartment.  Luckily, there was nothing in the trash to make him sick, but still, it was a huge mess.

And so, it led to this:

I Eat Trash

In case you can’t read that, this is the sign:

The sign

Milo eats trash!  I also made him wear the sign around the apartment for a little bit, just for some added fun.

I Eat Trash -- all the time

So never joke about your dog eating trash because he will do it.  He’s lucky he’s so cute, right?

Friday Rest Day

It’s Friday!

I, for one, am excited for two reasons — 1. I’m always excited for Friday and 2. today is a rest day.  Training for our first half, I came to appreciate Fridays so much more than usual because they were the start of a break from the week AND a break from running.

Don’t get me wrong — I genuinely love running.  But a break is always nice :)

Speaking of running, I got my four miles in yesterday, but it was almost a minute slower than Wednesday.  I went a little earlier in the evening, and I was really struggling.  So for all my joking about late-hour running, maybe that is when I function best?

My knees were definitely feeling it after the run, so I engaged in my favorite post-run past time:  ice!

See Milo in the background looking out the window?

My knees have been hurting a bit this week, so I’m hoping that the ice, in combination with today’s rest day, help them feel a bit better.

After the run (and before dinner because apparently I’m a child), I treated myself to an ice cream cone that James picked up at the store.

Great post-run treat

Other than that, we kind of relaxed last night for the first time in almost two weeks since moving began.  We still have a lot to do, but we decided to take a break because we were tired and wanted to regain some sanity.  (It was nice to not have to move stuff in my work clothes and heels for once).

This little boy was also tired last night.

Sleepy Milo Bear

For some reason, Milo decided to take his nap between the tv and the dining room table.  It seemed like such a weird spot, so I snapped a pic.

Then, when I got up to do some laundry (using my new sorters!), I came back and found this in my place on the couch.

Making himself right at home

I’m glad Milo is feeling to comfortable in the new place.  One of our biggest worries was that–as a former shelter dog who bounced around from home to home in foster care–he would get upset when we moved and think we were leaving him.  But he definitely seems to know this is OUR home, and none of us are going anywhere :)

Well, off to work, then off to visit James’s family.  Hope you have a great weekend!

Nutella To Start My Day

Good morning!  I am tired today.

Milo is also tired.

Just a little nap

Maybe I shouldn't have tried to wake you and Dad up at 5 a.m., huh?

You thought 9 p.m. was late to run?  I didn’t even get on the treadmill at 9:25 p.m. last night, so by the time we finished our 4 miles and stopped down at the car to unload some stuff James got from Target, we weren’t back into the apartment until well after 10 p.m.

(Ps, our 4 miles went much better than Tuesday.  We ran our 4 miles pretty quickly and both felt good after).

Then, after setting up a few things in the apartment, and reading a little of this book…

Wild

,,,I finally got to bed.  Oh well, tomorrow is Friday!

Also, look what I got last night:

Laundry Sorters

I was (and still am) so excited about this!  I don’t mind doing laundry, but I HATE sorting laundry.  It’s just a waste of time when I want to quickly do a load of laundry.  Now it is pre-sorted, and I don’t have to waste any time.  So happy!  (I must be growing up).

Despite being tired, this morning has been good so far.  First, we finally moved the box with some of our food, so I could have this:

Nutella = Heaven!

This has brightened my entire day.  I added it to my daily oatmeal, and it was amazing!

Nutella Oatmeal

Also, now that we have cable, Home Improvement and the Fresh Prince are back in our morning routine!  Amazing what some classic 90′s television can do for the start of your day :)

Well, tonight is more moving, cleaning the old apartment, and running 4 miles.  It will be busy, but like I said — Friday is tomorrow!

Have a wonderful Thursday!

Half Marathon (2) Run #1 and One Lovely Blog

Morning!

Yesterday was a pretty eventful day because 1. we finally brought the tv from our old apartment to our new apartment (cable gets installed today!) and 2. we started traning for our second half!

I love the treadmills at the new apartment because they are much easier on  my knees, so typically my runs are a breeze.  However, I kind of fell asleep at 8:30 p.m. (still not caught up on sleep), so it was difficult to find the energy to run when James woke me up at 9 p.m.  But I was doing great….until my ipod died.  Then I decided that was it for me, so I ran the .27 more miles to get to 3 and called it a night. Oh well!  I know I can do 4 tonight (which is what the plan calls for), so I’m not worried!

Plus, we moved the TV right after we ran, so I’ll count that as training :)

TV in the new place

I’m also excited because Steph from PJs and Yoga Pants nominated me for the One Lovely Blog Award.

One Lovely Blog Award

I’ve seen this award floating around, so I’m excited to particpate.  Here’s how it works:

- Link back to the blogger who nominated you

- Paste the award image on your blog

- Tell 7 facts about yourself.

  1. Ice cream is my favorite food and I wish I could eat it everyday
  2. I was home-schooled for fifth through eighth grade by my mom, and it was awesome
  3. I went to Butler University in Indianapolis and picked it without ever having visited the campus (it worked out well though)
  4. I count stairs when I walk up or walk down them.  I don’t know why.  And it’s not like I need to end on an even or odd number to get off the stairs.  I just count. It’s my Monk-esqe quirk.  Or Sheldon-esqe
  5. I have to listen to the radio/CD in my car  with the volume on an even number — ok, second Monk-esqe quirk
  6. The first horror movie I watched was “Evil Dead,” and my dad made jokes about it the whole time so my sister and I wouldn’t get scared.  Now, I sort of think of the movie as a comedy :)
  7. My mom wanted to sign me up for acting classes when I was little.  Now I really wish I would have said yes because I could be famous!

- Now, nominate other blogs you like for this award and let them know you nominated them.  I nominate:

Linz @ Itz Linz

Michelle @ better with Berries

Alyssa @ PB and Oats

Paige @ Your Trainer Paige

Two Top 100 Movies

Morning, all!

I’m still trying to catch up on sleep from this weekend (I even fell asleep on the floor on Sunday while watching the new episode of Breaking Bad…oops!), and apparently 9 hours is not enough sleep because I am struggling this morning.

Hopefully I wake up more throughout the day because today is the first day of our training for our second half marathon!  The half is in September, so we are starting today with an easy 4 mile run.

Because I’m tired and out of it, I’m going to keep this post simple with two movie reviews.

(And by review, I just mean recap.  If you want some real reviews, head over to Staci‘s blog, especially if you are interested in the Dark Knight Rises).

Last week, James and I started two different movies from AFI’s Top 100 — Easy Rider on Wednesday and Annie Hall on Thursday.  Unfortunately, we fell asleep about halfway through both.

So last night, after buying a new mattress(!!), we decided to finish both of them.

Easy Rider is hard to explain — actually, not really.  It’s about two guys who decide to ride their motorcycles from LA to New Orleans in the 1960′s.

We were surprised though because there wasn’t much plot, and there were some strange scenes where we didn’t really understand what was going on.  Then the movie ended abruptly.

I have to say that I wasn’t as impressed with this one as I have been with the other Top 100 movies we watched so far.  It was cool to see a young Jack Nicholson, and the dialogue was funny in parts.

I also loved most of the music (definitely in the first half of the movie).  Although I didn’t think this was a bad movie, I don’t think I would put it in the Top 100.

Annie Hall was much better, and I was a big fan.  Annie Hall is about the relationship between two New Yorkers — Woody Allen and Diane Keaton.

I loved Keaton in this!  She seemed so natural, and she was fun to watch.

The movie itself was quite funny.  It was subtle funny, which is my favorite, and I really enjoyed some of Woody Allen’s come backs.  It was also fun to see young Christopher Walken and young Jeff Goldblum.

I really liked this movie — not super romance-y (which I’m not a huge fan of), but just a good, funny movie.  If you can watch only one of these, I would definitely pick Annie Hall.

Well, off to work!  Have a great Tuesday!

First 23 PAWS

Happy Monday morning everyone!

Today’s post is a special one to me because I am participating in Cinnamon‘s 23 PAWS monthly link up.

23 PAWS

23 PAWS takes place on the 23rd of every month, and the point is to talk about our wonderful children pets.

As you may know (unless you live under a rock), I am a little obsessed with Milo Bear, so this is right up my alley.  I wanted my first post to be about the two guys in my life — Milo and James.

One of my favorite things about getting Milo (almost one year ago!) is seeing how him and James act around each other.  Milo definitely loves his dad and one of his favorite things is to sit in James’s lap in James’s chair.  Even though James originally said Milo would never be allowed in that chair, of course, James changed his mind as soon as he met and fell in love with Milo.  They also spend every other part of the day together, too.

Milo is definitely man’s — in particular, James’s — best friend, and it is one of my favorite things about owning a dog.  I love watching these two together and try to take as many pictures of these two as possible.

Well, thanks for reading my first 23 PAWS post.  Have a great start to your week!

Wedding Weekend in Illinois

Happy Sunday night!

This weekend went way too fast because I spent it with some of my best friends at my sorority sister Lauren’s wedding.  James and I went to southern Illinois to spend the weekend celebrating a great friend.  The wedding was so so fun, but instead of talking about it, check out the pics below:

Off to a Wedding

Well, it’s 5:26 a.m., but I couldn’t be happier because I’m off to the wedding of one of my former roommates/sorority sisters.

I can’t wait to see these girls!

The Bride is the first one in the bottom row on the left

I’ll recap when I get back.  Have a great weekend!!
